Turtle Hill Neighborhood

The Turtle Hill Neighborhood, first platted in 1857, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kansas City, Kansas. The Wyandott Indians originally owned the land on which the neighborhood is built and its highest point was called Turtle Hill, an allusion to the Wyandott’s creation myth. Starting in the 1880s, the area was home to prominent and influential citizens who built and resided in Queen Anne and Victorian-style homes.

Over a period of years, City Vision staff and community leaders worked together to develop a detailed redevelopment strategy for this neighborhood, an eight-square block area that includes some 200 households. To date, 35 new homes have been built and sold and many of the neighborhood’s Victorian homes have been renovated. Home ownership rates have increased from 60 percent to 85 percent. New home buyers have included moderate income families who became homeowners for the first time, as well as middle-income house hunters who were attracted by a revitalized urban landscape. Over $1 million in new streets, sidewalks, and street lighting further enhance the attractiveness and security of the neighborhood. Today Turtle Hill continues to be a strong, vibrant and attractive residential neighborhood.
