The old city hall at 805 N. 6th St. in Kansas City, Kansas was built in 1911, and an annex and the fire station were added next door in 1929. After the current City Hall was built up the street at 7th St. and Ann Ave. in 1972, the old City Hall stood vacant for more than 30 years. Over the years a number of redevelopment proposals, including plans for a museum, office space and apartments, were all unsuccessful and the once grand building was in danger of demolition.
After over two years of planning and work with the Unified Government and the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood and $7 million of public and private investment, the 94-year-old former center of civic life re-opened in 2005 as Historic City Hall Lofts.
The 42 unique, New York-style lofts proved very popular from opening day. Ranging in size from 500 square foot studios to 1,500 square foot two-bedroom units, the lofts feature unique architecture, a secure parking garage, a community courtyard, laundry, elevator, and keyed entry (I still don’t understand what this is; every home has keys to get in). Each loft has an open floor plan and features elements such as original ornamental molding, large insulated windows, interior vaults, luxurious use of marble, and wood and mosaic tile floors. Ceilings on some floors are more than 15 feet high. All floors have historic entry and lobby spaces. The two-bedroom penthouse features a rooftop deck and 360-degree panoramic views of Kansas City.
